Law No. 12.138 establishing guidelines for the State Policy on Women's Rights in Comprehensive Health Care for Pregnant Women, Parturient Women and Post-partum Women in the State of Maranhão.

This Law establishes the guidelines for the State Policy on Women's Rights in Comprehensive Health Care for Pregnant Women, Parturient Women and Post-partum Women. The Policy consists of ensuring women's right to reproductive planning and the humanization of quality health care throughout the pregnancy-puerperal period. The principles of the State Policy are: I - respect for human rights; II-respect for the woman's condition as an active subject during pregnancy, pre-delivery, childbirth and the post-partum period, with her wishes being taken into consideration at all stages of health care during the pregnancy-puerperal cycle; III - guarantee of women's sexual and reproductive rights; IV - respect for cultural, ethnic and racial diversity; V - the promotion of equity; and, VI - the gender approach. The objectives of the State Policy are: I - reduce maternal, fetal and child mortality; II - humanize women's health care services with an emphasis on prenatal care, childbirth and the postpartum period; and, III - eradicate obstetric violence.
