Regulation No. 1007/2024 on the commercial harvesting of marine vegetation.

This Regulation establishes rules for the commercial harvesting of marine vegetation, including seaweed and kelp, within Iceland’s fisheries jurisdiction. It requires operators to obtain permits from the Directorate of Fisheries for seaweed cutting and marine vegetation harvesting, sets conditions for harvesting both within and outside private coastal property boundaries, and introduces sustainability safeguards such as mandatory harvesting plans, environmental assessments, rotational harvesting periods, and consultation with marine and natural research institutions. The regulation also contains detailed requirements on harvesting methods, equipment, environmental protection, monitoring, weighing and catch registration, and oversight by the Directorate of Fisheries and the Icelandic Coast Guard, while allowing authorities to restrict or reorganize harvesting activities to prevent overexploitation and ecological harm.
