Abstract
This Act makes provision with respect to local government in Niue and for this purpose provides for the establishment of village councils, defines their functions and powers and contains rules to their election, functioning and administration.
A village council shall be established by the Resident Commissioner as a body corporate and shall carry out functions in various sectors including agriculture, livestock and fisheries, town and village planning, forestry, land conservation, supply of water, public health, public utilities, trade and industry and the protection of flora and fauna. Specific functions of the councils are set out in the Schedule to this Ordinance.
