Description

UNEP supported the Government of Solomon Islands to prepare the Wildlife Protection and Management (CITES) (Fees, Permit and Certificates) Regulations, 2018, and the Wildlife Protection and Management (CITES) (Management Authority) Regulations, 2018, under their Wildlife Protection and Management Act, 2017.

The finalized Wildlife Protection and Management (Amendment) Regulations were officially gazetted in June 2020.

Achieved outcomes and impacts

The regulations provide an enabling framework for Solomon Islands to fulfil its obligations under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). They aim to ensure that persons who trade in specimens covered under CITES apply for a permit, and that certain legal requirements are met before issuance of the such permits.

UNEP Support

UNEP supported the Government of Solomon Islands in developing the regulations through a Small-Scale Funding Agreement dated 11 January 2018, as well as through providing legal guidance and reviewing the draft guidelines.

Partners

UNEP and the Government of the Solomon Islands worked closely with the CITES secretariat.
