This workshop (11-12 November 2025) is a component of the broader Montevideo Environmental Law Programme project titled “Promoting and enhancing capacity of African and Asian Countries to Develop and Implement E-Waste Regulatory Frameworks,” focused on regional cooperation, capacity-building, and sharing of good practices on the development and implementation of legislation and regulations on the environmentally sound management of e-waste.
Objectives
The workshop will seek to:
- Facilitate regional dialogue and identify common challenges, gaps and means to address these gaps, relating to the development, strengthening, and implementation of legislative and regulatory frameworks for the environmentally sound management of e-waste in ASEAN.
- Serve as a forum for sharing good legislative and regulatory practices for the environmentally sound management of e-waste at the national level, including the role of different relevant stakeholders and actors, the regulatory development process and drafting principles.
- Highlight examples of key legislative provisions and measures for the environmentally sound management of e-waste at the national level.
- Promote awareness of existing guidance and tools, such as the Basel Convention’s legislative guide and e-waste technical guidelines
- Identify areas for potential capacity-building needs in the environmentally sound management of e-waste, specifically in the development, strengthening, and implementation of e-waste legislation and regulations.
Expected outcomes
- The expected outcomes of the workshop will be:
- Enhanced awareness among participants of the importance of an appropriate legislative and regulatory framework for the environmentally sound management of e-waste
- Increased understanding of common legislative and regulatory challenges, gaps, and means to address these gaps relating to the environmentally sound management of e-waste in ASEAN Member States.
- Identification of good practices in the development, strengthening, and implementation of legislative and regulatory frameworks on the environmentally sound management of e-waste in ASEAN Member States, including examples of key legislative provisions and measures.
- Increased awareness and uptake of existing guidance and tools for the development, strengthening, and implementation of e-waste legislation.
- Strengthened regional cooperation and engagement with the Montevideo Environmental Law Programme.
