Description:
Under the auspices of the Fifth Montevideo Programme for the Development and Periodic Review of Environmental Law, and as part of its efforts to support the development and implementation of effective environmental laws, the UNEP Law Division is hosting a webinar to guide and support officials in navigating the path ahead following the conclusion of the negotiations to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. Specifically, the webinar aims to equip officials involved in the negotiation process covering the upcoming Diplomatic Conference up to the first meeting of a governing body.
The webinar will bring together legal experts with extensive knowledge of international environmental law and international intergovernmental negotiations. The speakers will delve into the history of the negotiation process and outline the path ahead. Special emphasis will be placed on the preparatory period following INC-5, exploring the role of the Diplomatic Conference and the road towards the first meeting of the governing body. Further, speakers will showcase recent experiences in the negotiation of the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The webinar is open to the participation of INC focal points, Montevideo Programme national focal points, as well as other government officials involved in the negotiation process.
