The secretariat of the Green Customs Initiative, in partnership with the joint secretariat of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade, and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (BRS secretariat), is organizing an event titled, “Greening Customs for People, Planet and Prosperity: The Case of Waste Management.” The event will be held at the sidelines of the 31st Session of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime’s Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice on Tuesday, 17 May at 9-10 a.m. CET. It will bring together several national enforcement  authorities including representatives from Nigeria, the Dominican Republic, and the United Kingdom as well as, the World Customs Organization and the UNODC to share challenges and lessons learnt in preventing and combatting traffic in hazardous and other wastes.

The event is hoped to increase awareness amongst customs and border enforcement agencies on their role in combatting traffic in hazardous and other wastes. It will provide a forum for exchange of good practices in identification and reporting on trafficked hazardous and other wastes. Additionally, the event will aid in identifying capacity gaps and areas for future collaboration between participating authorities, the GCI secretariat and the BRS secretariat.

The event will be conducted in English, here on Microsoft Teams, and the agenda is available here. For additional information, please reach out to Ms. Jackline Wanjiru.
