Abstract
This Arabian Oryx Regional Conservation Strategy and Action Plan is a comprehensive framework to develop a regional program for restoring the Arabian oryx in its natural habitats, ensuring its long-term survival, and implementing successful reintroduction programs. It addresses the conservation efforts in Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. The core Vision of the Strategy is to establish viable, sustainable, and free-ranging populations of Arabian oryx in natural habitats across their historic range, living in harmony with local communities. National Action Plans should be developed in each country, based on the Strategy's principles, with regional coordination by the CCCAO to ensure best practices and regular review.
The main objectives of the Arabian Oryx conservation strategy are (i) complete legislative processes and enhance enforcement of wildlife laws, which involves reviewing existing laws, unifying legislation across a range of states, exchanging information, and training personnel for effective law enforcement to ensure the protection of Arabian Oryx; (ii) enhance and increase wild oryx populations by strengthening current reintroduction programs and developing new ones for each range state. This includes assessing and improving habitat conditions in potential release areas, controlling overgrazing, and conducting environmental impact assessments for development projects affecting the species; (iii) establish a regional species management plan by conducting demographic and genetic evaluations to identify important populations and individuals; (iv) secure public support and participation through awareness programs, educational outreach, and community involvement in conservation efforts, while ensuring income-generation opportunities related to conservation; (v) build regional capacity by identifying gaps, offering technical training workshops, and facilitating field visits for staff; (vi) emphasize coordination between range states, with mechanisms to strengthen the role of the CCCAO (Coordinating Committee for Conservation of the Arabian Oryx) and improve information exchange; (vii) secure financial sustainability by identifying funding sources and promoting the establishment of an Arabian Oryx Trust Fund to ensure ongoing support for conservation programs.
