Cabinet Resolution No.31 of 2018 on Community Agriculture.

This Resolution consisting of 14 articles aims to (i) improve the environment, diversify plant production, and promote diversity and food security; (ii) strengthen the culture of agriculture and food production and contribute to the creation of a conscious generation that contributes to the maintenance of sustainable agricultural development; (iii) contribute to bridging part of the daily household needs of plant agricultural products; (iv) encourage a move towards climate smart agriculture such as soil-less agriculture and organic agriculture; and (v) increase the optimal use of water for reuse in community agriculture. It promotes optimum utilization of unused residential spaces and building rooftops for agricultural activities.
Tasks of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment to encourage community agriculture shall be (i) prepare technical programs, guidelines, and publications to increase awareness about its importance; and (ii) define its principles, methods and rules of application. The local authority within each Emirate shall (i) to provide seeds, seedlings and the means necessary to implement the programs, especially where preparation is needed; and (ii) provide educational institutions and residential spaces with the necessary guidelines to implement the agricultural activities.
Recommended crops are those that (i) have environmental return; (ii) withstand the climatic conditions of the country and need little irrigation; (iii) resistant to pests and diseases; (iv) are not invasive alien species; (v) increase food security; and (vi) aim to conserve the environment in a sustainable manner and increase the diversification of agricultural production. As for the irrigation, the Resolution promotes (i) the use of modern irrigation systems and techniques; and (ii) the use of used waters suitable for irrigation.
