Federal Law No. 56 of 2004 issuing the Regulations for Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials.

These Regulations concern the transport of excepted packages, industrial packages, packages type A, B(U) and B(M). The provisions of these Regulations do not concern the transport of materials related to a nuclear fuel cycle, materials resulting from the operation of a nuclear reactor, packages type C and packages containing fissile materials. The licence requirements, the exempt consignments and the radioactive material characterization are specified in the text.
The text regulates the packaging of radioactive materials and the permissible limits by specifying the conditions for transport of unpackaged radioactive materials, the types of packages, the radioactivity limits for package contents. It also defines the contamination, radiation level, and transport index limit and divide the packages into different categories.
The Regulations define the transport and dispatch instructions of shipments: marking, labeling and placarding; transport documents; segregation, stowage and storage during transport and in transit; carrying packages in passengers compartments; decontamination; shipping empty packages; other provisions transport of radioactive material; additional requirements relating to transport by air and post. The conditions for the approval of packages design and shipment are also specified in the text.
