The Manual deals with (i) definition of types and classification of infectious waste; (ii) detailed procedures for safe handling, starting from its generation to the final disposal; (iii) mechanism to reduce the risk of exposure to pollutants and infectious wastes; (iv) enhancing the capabilities of dealing with infectious waste to ensure proper and safe management.

As provided by Resolution No.37 of 2001 issuing the Regulation of the Unified Law on Environmental Protection ad Development No.24 of 1999, public and private health facilities of any kind are prohibited from disposing of the medical wastes mentioned in Tables 1 and 2 of Appendix 2 of this Guide "outside the containers prepared for this". Section 5 is a specific guide to handling, treating, and disposing of waste generated during the treatment, diagnosis, and isolation of pandemic patients in general, with a focus on Covid-19 as an example, in order to cope with pandemics that have emerged and may arise in the future.
