Abstract
The National Strategy for Combating Desertification is a comprehensive sectoral document designed to address issues related to desertification, land degradation, and drought on a national scale. Its primary objectives are to enhance land productivity, promote land rehabilitation, and conserve water resources to ensure sustainability. The Strategy sets ambitious targets for the year 2030, including (i) a 40% increase in the efficiency of local production systems; (ii) restoration of a minimum of 80% of degraded land; and (iii) a 60% improvement in water consumption efficiency, alongside the use of treated water. To realize these objectives, the strategy delineates five key directions: (1) safeguarding ecosystems and enhancing conditions in arid and dry lands; (2) addressing the impacts of climate change on ecosystems affected by desertification; (3) advancing awareness, education, and capacity building regarding desertification; (4) embracing modern technologies and incorporating scientific research in the fight against desertification; and (5) fortifying partnerships and fostering cooperation at national, regional, and international levels. At the global level, the Strategy aligns with Goal 15 of the Sustainable Development Goals in the 2030 Agenda, emphasizing the preservation, restoration, and sustainable utilization of terrestrial ecosystems to support life on land. It aims to manage forests sustainably, combat desertification, and prevent land degradation. Key interventions recommended include (i) community awareness campaigns and educational programs in schools to inform and engage students; (ii) comprehensive collection and analysis of available data for informed decision-making, policy formulation, and empowerment; and (iii) providing technical support to farmers to enhance agricultural practices and increase the percentage of green lands in the country. The document features a detailed Action Program specifying actions, responsible entities and their partners, priority levels, and timelines for implementation.
Regarding governance, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment serves as the primary entity tasked with implementing and financing programs dedicated to tackling desertification.
