Abstract
This Act provides for measures aimed at the protection of consumers and the safety of goods placed on the market in Antigua and Barbuda and for this purpose establishes the Department of Consumer Affairs and the Consumer Guidance Council and defines functions and powers of the Minister, the Director of Consumer Affairs and the Council with respect to the protection of consumers and the safety of goods.
The Department shall be responsible for the administration of this Act and shall be headed by the Director of Consumer Affairs. The Act assigns various functions to the Director for the protection of consumers. The Council shall be an advisory organ. The Minister or the Director may seek advice from the Council on consumer trade practices. The Act sets out procedures for the blocking of consumer trade practices that may harm consumer interests. The definition of goods used in this Act does not include food or drugs within the meaning of the Public Health Act.
