INTERSTATE STANDARD GOST 33302—2015 FRESH AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS Guidelines on Irradiation for Phytosanitary Processing Purposes contains information on the use of ionizing radiation (irradiation) in the processing of fresh agricultural products to reduce the number of insects and other arthropod pests in order to ensure compliance with phytosanitary requirements. These Guidelines are a list of recommendations for the use of irradiation technology where approved by the appropriate regulatory body. The Guidelines should not be regarded as a requirement for the use of irradiation or as a set of binding rules. Although the use of irradiation implies some essential requirements that must be met in order to achieve the technological goal of the treatment, some parameters can be changed in order to optimize the process. The primary purpose of these Guidelines is to indicate the treatments (phytosanitary measures) needed to reduce pests commonly associated with fresh agricultural produce. Typical absorbed dose range. used for phytosanitary treatment ranges from 150 to 600 Gy. In practice, the minimum or maximum treatment dose may be higher or lower than the specified limits, depending on the type of pest to be eradicated, as well as the acceptable radiation dose for a particular type of fruit. If the minimum effective dose required to achieve the desired phytosanitary effect is greater than the allowable irradiation dose for that produce, then irradiation should not be considered an acceptable treatment. Proper packaging materials must be used to ensure product safety as part of the measures aimed at maintaining phytosanitary integrity. Fresh agricultural produce to be irradiated should be of generally good quality and demonstrate conformity with good agricultural practice.
