Abstract
This Presidential Decree approves the National Action Plan for the Conservation of Giraffes in Angola for the period 2026–2030. The main objective of the decree is to formalize a national policy framework for the conservation and management of giraffe populations, in response to their significant decline due to past armed conflicts, habitat loss, poaching, and other ecological pressures. The Plan aims to guide coordinated actions to protect biodiversity, restore giraffe populations, and ensure their long‑term survival, in line with constitutional provisions on environmental protection and Angola’s international commitments in the field of biodiversity conservation. The Plan further seeks to strengthen institutional, technical, and scientific capacities for wildlife management by establishing strategic objectives, measurable targets, and operational actions. These include improving data collection and knowledge on giraffe populations, enhancing monitoring systems, reinforcing anti‑poaching measures, promoting habitat protection, and supporting reintroduction initiatives. It also emphasizes community awareness, environmental education, and multi‑stakeholder cooperation at national and regional levels. Overall, the decree aims to ensure sustainable conservation of giraffes through an integrated approach that combines ecological protection, capacity building, and long‑term planning within Angola’s broader framework of sustainable development and biodiversity management.
