Abstract
Basic Environmental Law No. 5/98 of 19 June establishes that environmental education is the process through which citizens and bodies of society develop efforts to promote the creation and implementation of social values, knowledge, habits, attitudes and skills aimed at environmental conservation, exploitation and sustainable use of resources in for the improvement of the quality of life and its sustainability. The thematic areas of environmental education are: a) Air, water and noise pollution; sustainable development and management of natural resources; b) Licensing and environmental assessment; c) Protection of the soil and the sea; d) Environmental risks; e) Environmental sanitation; f) Climate change.
The National Environmental Education Strategy has the following general objectives: a) Strengthen dialogue mechanisms between State Administration bodies and civil society, on the country's future in terms of environmental protection; b) Establish consensus on certain measures and joint actions that must be developed by the different actors in society; c) Create an environment for the production of values and behavior change aimed at environmental sustainability; d) Expand the knowledge base on sustainability and environmental protection issues; e) Increase sustainable practices and habits, as well as the reduction of environmental damage; f) To encourage the permanent and responsible participation of citizens and society in preserving the environment.
