Abstract
This Protocol has been adopted in implementation of the Alpine Convention as regards soil protection. The Protocol consists of the following Chapters: (I) General Provisions; (II) Specific Measures; (III) Research, Education and Information; (IV) Implementation, Control and Valuation; (V) Final Provisions. The Protocol pursues the sustainable and efficient maintenance of soil, since it represents a vital element for mankind, animals, plants and micro-organisms. The measures to be undertaken by the Parties in compliance with these provisions shall guarantee the sustainable use of soil, especially when exploited in agriculture, pastoralism and forestry. To this end, the Parties undertake to set up throughout the Alpine territory areas to be subject to a permanent monitoring system (article 21).

Entry into force notes
This Protocol shall enter into force upon deposit of instruments of ratification, acceptance or approval with the Republic of Austria by at least three Contracting Parties.

The present Protocol has been ratified by the Republic of Austria (BGBl. III No. 235/2002); by the Federal Republic of Germany by Act of 20 August 2002 ( BGBl. II p. 1785).
