Abstract
The Styrian Biosphere Park Act 2022 provides the legal basis for establishing and managing UNESCO Biosphere Parks in Styria. It defines criteria for designating areas as biosphere parks, requiring them to represent natural or cultural landscapes of regional significance. The Act sets out zoning into core, buffer (care), and development areas, with strict protection in core zones and sustainable use permitted in other zones. It establishes objectives such as safeguarding UNESCO recognition, conserving biodiversity and landscapes, promoting sustainable land use, supporting regional development, and fostering environmental education and research.
The Act further regulates management structures, including a leadership committee, advisory board, and park management, which are responsible for strategic planning, day-to-day administration, and monitoring. It grants supervisory rights to the provincial government, specifies approval procedures for activities, ensures public access rights, and provides mechanisms for restoration if unlawful activities occur. The Act consists of 12 Articles.
