Abstract
This Act, consisting of 68 sections divided into eight Parts, provides for the protection, recognition and preservation of Aboriginal cultural heritage in Western Australia.
The Act provides for the establishment of the Aboriginal Cultural Material Committee and defines its internal organization and its functions, which include: to evaluate on behalf of the community the importance of places and objects alleged to be associated with Aboriginal persons; to record and preserve the traditional Aboriginal lore related to such places and objects; and to recommend to the Minister places and objects which are of special significance to persons of Aboriginal descent and should be preserved, acquired and managed by the Minister. A Registrar of Aboriginal Sites shall be appointed to maintain a register of all protected areas, all aboriginal cultural material and all other places and objects to which this Act applies.
The Act further provides for powers of inspectors and for appropriate sanctions and penalties.
