Abstract
This Act, consisting of 83 sections divided into eight Parts, concerns the welfare of animals and aims at preventing cruelty to animals. The objectives of this Act are: a) to ensure that animals are treated humanely; b) to prevent cruelty to animals; and c) to promote community awareness about the welfare of animals. It defines obligations for the management of animals and provides for the adoption of a code of practice. The Act establishes the Animal Welfare Authority and the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee and regulates their operation. Provisions concern also the use of animals for scientific purposes and for research.
