Abstract
The Regulations are organized in 5 Parts. Part 1, Preliminary, Part 2 contains general welfare provisions that consider mishandling and mistreatment of livestock, dragging and/or lifting livestock, use of electric stock prod and use of dogs generally, among others. Part 3 focuses on provisions for the transport process and identifies firstly general duties for livestock transporter such as duty to maintain records. Part 3 then contains provisions concerning loading and unloading vehicles, requirements for livestock handling facilities (other than saleyards and depots) and more specifically duties and requirements to follow to ensure welfare of livestock during transport process. These include: selection and supply of livestock for transport, loading livestock unfit, duty to make appropriate arrangements for livestock, do not exceed a reasonable loading density, duty to protect livestock against extreme weather, duty to assess welfare of livestock during journey, etc.
Part 4 contains provisions for saleyards and depots Division 1 provides for requirements for saleyards and depots 55 and Division 2 more specifically on welfare of livestock at saleyards and depots. Under Division 2 we find: requirement to not exceed reasonable penning density, duty to segregate livestock at saleyards and depots, duty to ensure reasonable access to water and feed after unloading at saleyards and depots, duty to protect livestock against extreme weather, duty to assess welfare of livestock, specific conditions to respect concerning newborn livestock and their mothers The Regulations also contains special provisions both in Part 3 and 4 that apply only to bobby calves.
