Abstract
The Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code is organised in 4 Chapters and 1 Schedule. Here we outline Chapter 1. Other Chapters can be found in related links.
After a brief introduction on the structure of the code and definitions, Chapter 1, Part 1.2 contains provisions that apply to all types of food. It regulates labelling requirements, information requirements for food identification, warning statements, advisory statements and declarations, for statement of ingredients, for date marking of food for sale, directions for use and storage, nutrition, health and related Nutrition information requirements, ingredients and components of food.
Part 1.5 regulates foods requiring pre-market clearance and concerns novel foods, food produced using gene technology and irradiation of food. Part 1.3 provides standards for substances added to or present in food, these include processing aids, vitamins and minerals, food additives. Part 1.6 provides for microbiological limits and processing in food. Standard 1.6.2 applies only in Australia and concerns processing requirements for meat. Part 1.4 set standards for contaminants and natural toxicants, Agvet chemicals (applies in Australia only) and provides a list of prohibited and restricted plants and fungi.
