Abstract
This Act provides the discipline for closer settlement; it establishes conditions for purchase of land, requirements to be a holder, settlement process and allocation, settlement review, purchase rights, and subsidies for holders.
Under Art. 14 the Tasmania Development and Resources can purchase any land, with the consent of the Minister, and do all such acts and things as may appear to it to be just and equitable and either necessary or convenient for settling eligible persons on the land and enabling them to become independent land owners (Art. 21).
Under the Art. 25 a person is incapable of taking a lease when he is under the age of 18 years, or he and his spouse, hold or holds in their or his own right rural land which in the opinion of TDR provides, or is sufficient to provide, a reasonable living for him and his family, or if the person is the holder of another lease under this Part unless TDR is satisfied that the land subject to the other lease is insufficie nt to provide a reasonable living for that person and his family. A lessee of a holding under a settlement lease may, at any time during the term of the lease, purchase that holding (Art. 35).
