Abstract
The Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations 1997 provide guidelines for regulating noise emissions in Western Australia. These regulations are part of the Environmental Protection Act 1986 and cover various aspects of noise management. The regulations establish definitions for key terms, such as "assigned levels," "noise-sensitive premises," and types of noise emissions. Specific exemptions are outlined, including noises from motor vehicle braking systems, emergency vehicles, and trains. The regulations then focus on allowable noise emissions, prescribing standards adjusted for tonality, modulation, and impulsiveness. Noise levels vary depending on the type of premises and the time of day. Detailed provisions exist for particular activities and premises, including airblast noise from blasting, motor sport venues, shooting venues, construction sites, and equipment used in residential settings. There is also consideration for noise from community events and cultural activities. Further sections delve into the measurement of noise emissions. These include the calibration and compliance standards for sound measuring equipment, as well as methods for determining noise levels at various premises. Finally, the regulations are complemented by schedules that classify premises, define rules for sound measuring equipment, and provide methodologies for assessing influencing factors on noise-sensitive premises.
