Abstract
The objects of this Act include: (a) to ensure food for sale is both safe and suitable for human consumption; (b) to prevent misleading conduct in connection with the sale of food; (c) to provide for the application in Victoria of the Food Standards Code.
The Act consists of 81 sections and is divided into 15 parts. Part I addresses preliminary matters, including definitions and application of the Act; Part IA contains administration and reporting provisions; Part II defines offences relating to food; Part III is dedicated to the cleanliness of food premises, the cleanliness of food handlers and Part IIIA and B to food safety programs; Part IV provides for authorized officers and Part V for analysts; Part VI is dedicated to the registration of food premises; Part VII defines emergency powers; Part VIII covers legal proceedings; Part VIIIA refers to the publication of convictions; Part IX contains miscellaneous provisions, including access to information. Part X establishes and regulates the operation of the Food Safety Council and Part XI to XIV cover regulations and transitional matters.

An Act to consolidate and amend the Law relating to the preparation and sale of food, to make provision for securing the wholesomeness and purity of and fixing standards for food, to prevent false or misleading packaging and labelling of food and false or misleading advertising in connection with food, to amend the Health Act 1958, the Magistrates (Summary Proceedings) Act 1975 and the Health Commission Act 1977 and for other purposes.
