Abstract
This first National Plastics Plan 2021 delivers on action 5.5 of the National Waste Policy Action Plan (NWPAP). The Plan is organised in 5 thematic areas divided in 5 chapters: Chapter 1 is preventions; Chapter 2 is Recycling; Chapter 3 plastic in our daily lives, Chapter 4 plastic in our oceans and waterways; Chapter 5 is innovation, research and data. Several actions are envisaged under each of the priority areas, follow some examples: phase out unnecessary and problematic plastics; free plastic beaches; national packaging target; shift to recyclable plastic; export ban for unsorted plastic; establishment of national circular economy hub; Assess and identify collection processes and the feasibility of reprocessing packaging waste in remote and regional areas through partnerships; combat green washing; better recycling information for consumers; stormwater initiatives; pursue coordinated global action on marine litter and microplastic pollution through a new global agreement; stewardship scheme for cigarette buds; national plastic pollution database; invest in waste data visualization platform;etc.
