Abstract
The National Soil Strategy 2021 is a 20 years Strategy that provides a national vision and shared goals and objectives between the Australian, state and territory governments for managing soil across all landscapes.
This Strategy contains 3 goals and 12 objectives which will guide Australia’s efforts to better manage its soil. The goals and objectives are underpinned by the following principles: Collaborative decision-making, alignment of effort and partnerships; Science and innovation including research, monitoring and evaluation; Traditional Knowledge: intended as knowledge, innovations and practices shared by First Nations Peoples are valued and respected and should inform, where appropriate, planning, management and conservation of our soil resource; Knowledge sharing; Future soil security intended as sustainable use of soil to meet future generations' needs; Immediate action to better manage, prevent or remediate degradation of soil and the environment; Accounting for soil in all relevant decision-making significantly enhances outcomes in terms of agricultural production and ecosystem services; Soil management beyond legal tenure boundaries; Enabling bioregional and local knowledge to be used in the development of place-based and locally adapted and generated solutions.
Goal 1 is Prioritize soil health. Objectives related to this Goal are: 1) Recognize the value of soil by making sustainable soil management a national priority in policy development, research and practice; 2) Strengthen leadership and partnerships to address national soil priorities; 3) Advocate the importance of soil; 4) mprove Australia’s international leadership in soil knowledge, awareness and management. Goal 2 is empower soil innovation and stewards. Objectives are: 1) Promote soil stewardship; 2) Optimise soil productivity, sustainability and resilience; 3) Help protect and enhance Australia’s environment through effective soil management; 4) Increase and maintain soil organic carbon. Goal 3 focuses on strengthening soil knowledge and capability. Objectives related to this Goal are: 1) Increase soil knowledge for better decisions; 2) Measure benefits of improved soil management; 3) Make Australian soil information and data available; 4) Build and retain diverse soil expertise
