Abstract
The Western Australia Veterinary Practice Amendment Regulations 2025 introduce several changes to the existing Veterinary Practice Regulations 2022. These amendments include new definitions and regulations for veterinary nurses and students, specifying the levels of supervision required for various veterinary acts. The regulations also outline the conditions under which veterinarians can prescribe, supply, and administer scheduled drugs, and introduce new provisions for the recognition of advanced veterinary nurses.
A veterinarian must have physically examined the animal within the last seven days before prescribing, supplying, or administering the drug. For animals in a group at the same premises, the veterinarian must have inspected the premises and assessed the general health of the group within the last twelve months. Alternatively, if examining the animal is impractical or unnecessary, the veterinarian must have examined at least one animal in the group within the last seven days and discussed the health of the group with the person in charge. If the animal was treated with the drug by the same veterinarian, another veterinarian in the same practice, or a veterinary specialist within the last twelve months, and the veterinarian has discussed the animal's health with the person in charge within the last seven days, further examination may not be necessary. The veterinarian must ensure that the person in charge of the animal is competent and has the necessary equipment and facilities to handle, store, transport, and administer the drug safely and effectively. Lastly, the veterinarian must not prescribe, supply, or administer more of the drug than is reasonably required to treat the animal.
