Abstract
The development of rural tourism is a need, which has been identified as an option in the municipality of Pale for sustainable development of the rural economy for which there are serious potentials. Rural tourism is considered the most suitable option for the development of parts of municipality that are not covered by development of winter (ski) tourism. Ski tourism is the backbone of economic prosperity in parts of the municipality of Pale, which have ski tourism on Jahorina, and recently on Ravna mountain. FAO experts have prepared this rural tourism plan in full participatory way, focusing on improvement and diversification of local services and products and on respecting the principles of sustainability. The plan is based on a multisectoral and territorial development approach which includes strengthening of small family farms and rural community, empowering local leaders and public-private partnerships. The key goal is the integral strengthening of the value chain of tourism, as well as development of short supply chain of rural tourism from local food production in agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting, as well as quality interactions between urban and rural areas. This approach would enabled the mitigation of the risk of lack of human resources associated with depopulation of villages and degradation of rural family farms.
