Abstract
The "2nd Sava River Basin Management Plan" (2022) focuses on the water management strategies for the Sava River Basin, developed in line with the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). Signed by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, and Montenegro, the plan aims to promote sustainable water use, protect ecosystems, and enhance cross-border cooperation in water resource management. It outlines the current status of surface and groundwater, significant pressures on the water bodies, and environmental objectives for the basin. Key issues identified include organic, nutrient, and hazardous pollution, as well as hydromorphological alterations. The plan presents a detailed program of measures to address these challenges, including pollution control, habitat restoration, and flood management. The 2nd Plan builds on the knowledge gained from the first cycle and integrates aspects such as climate change adaptation, navigation, agriculture, and hydropower. Public participation and stakeholder consultation are integral parts of the plan’s development. The plan also provides an economic analysis of water use and services and includes 10 annexes with additional technical data.
