Barbados National Energy Policy 2017-2037.

Barbados National Energy Policy is a national policy with a cross- sectoral approach. The timeframe of the policy is 20 years between 2017 and 2037. The main purpose of this Policy is to establish and maintain a sustainable energy sector for Barbados by ensuring energy security and affordability. The overall objectives of this Policy are: (I) achieving stability and predictability in energy product prices over the long term, (II) achieving affordability and access to all classes of consumers in energy products and services, (III) establishing a consistent and comprehensive regulatory framework to govern activities in various energy sub-sectors, (IV) increasing the amount of renewable energy sources used in the energy mix, (V) increasing diversity in the types of energy sources used in both the renewable energy and fossil fuel energy sectors, (VI) increasing the extent of energy resources obtained from indigenous sources, (VII) encouraging local investment in energy projects and programmes, (VIII) promoting more local entrepreneurial activities in renewable energy and increasing fossil fuel energy development throughout the energy sub-sectors, (IX) increasing collaboration within the energy subsectors and among the cross-cutting sectors, (X) improving the efficiency in the production and consumption of energy products, (XI) Improving the awareness and understanding of energy production and consumption, its impacts and the associated environmental and socio-economic consequences, (XII) increasing the number of persons locally with qualifications and skills relating to energy production and management of renewable energy and fossil fuel sources, (XIII) reducing the environmental impacts associated with the production and consumption of energy resources locally, (XIV) ensuring reliability and continuity of energy supply in the various local energy subsectors, (XV) attaining the lowest price sustainable by the local economy for various energy sources consumed in Barbados, while maintaining environmental efficiency, and (XVI) establishing effective partnerships between national and international entities for local energy projects.
