Animal Welfare Act, 2019 (No. 12 of 2019 Law).

Since the Cruelty to Animals Act, 1920 exists for the purpose of raising social awareness to ensure animal welfare (I of 1920), in view of its provisions, it is appropriate and necessary to enact new laws reflecting the needs for the animal welfare. The Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, make rules for the rearing, transportation and slaughter of animals. The Act lays down a general principle establishing that animals should be treated well and with respect. An animal may not be subjected to unnecessary pain or suffering, and the animal's welfare may not be jeopardized unnecessarily.
