Abstract
This Act, consisting of 19 sections, aims at ensuring safe and necessary balanced food for the development of the nutritional level of the people. In addition, it aims at implementing food-based nutrition research and training programs for the development of public health, the law made with the aim of establishing an institute named Bangladesh Applied Nutrition Research and Training Institute.
The Institute shall perform the following functions, namely: a) undertake and implement research and development activities related to food-based nutrition (progressive nutrition) in order to improve the nutritional level of the people; b) make people aware about government and non-governmental organizations, teachers of various educational institutions, representatives of local government, farmers and others on the basis of providing food based nutrition and nutrition policies; c) technology innovation and research on reducing food grains and post-harvest erosion-loss and food processing and preservation; d) conduct research on the functional food and medicinal plants, increase production in daily food list and raise awareness; e) assist in the formulation or preparation of nutritional analysis of food grains, determination or updating and preparation of necessary daily food lists; f) determine the health and nutritional health problems of district or agro-ecological zones, to ensure food and nutrition security and to exchange information received with the respective ministries or organizations; g) research on the harmful effects of chemicals used in food chains and enhancing consumer awareness; h) increase awareness of the nutrition and health of people by participating in various media programmes including Agricultural Melas, World Food Day, Nutrition Week, Livestock Fair, Fisheries Fair, Environment Day etc. i) undertake research and development activities jointly with the related nutritious food items, varieties and technologies, and related research institutions; j) creation of efficient human resources on nutrition through implementation of certificate and diploma courses in applied nutrition and food science; k) proper inclusion of lessons related to the applied nutrition curriculum in different educational institutions; l) provide recommendations on emergency arrangements if there is any problem due to malnutrition due to natural or any other; m) assist in the implementation, research and implementation of the activities related to climate change on nutrition conditions; n) preparation, implementation and recommendation of policy related to the activities of the Institute; etc.
