Abstract
The vision of the Bangladesh Population Policy (Policy) is a healthier, happier and wealthier country through planned development and control of the nation’s population. The rationale for the Policy is provided and the objectives include lowering fertility rate, reducing maternal and infant mortality, gender equity, women empowerment and easy access to information on reproductive health including family planning. The Policy lays down sixteen strategies: 1. Client-Centred Service; 2. Urban Health Care; 3. Area-Based plans and strategies; 4. Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) Program; 5. Adolescent Welfare Program; 6. Participation of non-government and private sectors; 7. Empowerment of women and equal partnership of men and women; 8. Human Resources Development; 9. Legal measures; 10. Social measures; 11. Population and Environment; 12. Discourage urban migration and introduce planned urbanization; 13. Integrated information collection and use; 14. Decentralization of administrative and financial power; 15. Production and supply of family planning commodities; and 16. Coordination with different policies and plans.
