Abstract
This Act provides for the prevention, control and eradication of communicable diseases. It contains a list of diseases termed as communicable diseases for the purposes of this Act. The functions and responsibilities of the government in respect of this Act are laid down, which include, formulating strategies to prevent, control and eradicate infectious diseases and protecting the public from their national and international spread, and seeking assistance from government and non-government, domestic and international organizations in implementing such strategies. It also includes inspecting and testing food, beverages or their raw materials during their preparation, storage, transportation and distribution for the purpose of detecting contamination or adulteration. An Advisory Committee is formed and its responsibilities and functions are laid down. Further, provisions in respect of providing information of any person suffering from infectious disease, declaration of infected areas, sample collection and testing, inspection, disinfection, international trade ban, and penalties for offences committed are also contained in the Act.

This Act repeals the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897; the Public Health (Emergency Provisions) Ordinance, 1944; the Bangladesh Malaria Eradication Board (Repeal) Ordinance, 1977; and the Prevention of Malaria (Special Provisions) Ordinance, 1978.
