National River Protection Commission Act, 2013 (Act No. 9 of 2013).

This Act, consisting of 4 Chapters, provides for creation the National River Protection Commission. It establishes the composition, duties and responsibilities of the Commission, entitled to: manage and control water and environmental pollution, caused by industrial pollution of rivers, construction of illegal structures and to prevent irregularities and restore the normal flow of the river, to control flood and drainage; hydrology, the use of surface and ground water; and to examine the equipment used in constructions of waterworks. It also applies to the proper maintenance of waterways necessary to ensure the socio-economic development of a multi-use and rational use of natural resources.
The Act defines the internal composition of the Commission and its duties, which include, amongst others: (a) to make recommendation to the Government for coordination of the functions among all concerned Ministries or Divisions related with river; to make recommendation to the Government to ensure environmentally balanced and sustainable management of rivers; to make recommendation after reviewing practical uses of existing different laws and policies related with the conservation of rivers and if necessary to amend the Act and policies.
