Abstract
This Ordinance provides for the establishment of the Bangladesh Tea Board and defines its internal organization and its functions.
Functions of the Board shall include: to regulate, control and promote the cultivation and export of tea; to regulate and control the sale of tea; to improve the quality of tea; and to establish new tea gardens and acquire or rehabilitate derelict tea gardens.
The Ordinance further imposes a cess on all tea produced in Bangladesh. The proceeds of the cess, except for the costs of collection, shall be paid to the Board.
In addition, the Ordinance defines the powers of the Board which shall be to: set up Committees and an Advisory Council; sell or transfer tea gardens; direct owners of estates to plant tea and direct the manner in which it shall be cultivated; fix the export allotment of tea; issue licences to export tea in order to control the export of tea and tea seeds; prohibit the transport, storage or sale of certain types of tea; etc.
In addition, the Ordinance contains penal provisions and provisions of miscellaneous nature.
