This kind of plan is aligned with all requirements of relevant national legislation. As regards the goals related to the sustainable and long-term management of forests in Europe, this text is in accordance with multiple issues deriving from Conference on the Protection of European Forests, Oslo, 2011; Improved Pan-European Sustainable Forest Management Criteria and Indicators, 2002; draft EU Forest Strategy 2014-2020; National Development Programme of Bulgaria 2020; and other listed documents.
The mission of the National Strategy for the Development of the Forestry Sector in the Republic of Bulgaria is to ensure a coherent and well-coordinated forest policy application and to create all necessary conditions aimed at ensuring the improvement and sustainable management of the forest sector. The National Strategy for the Development of the Forestry Sector in the Republic of Bulgaria for the period 2013-2020 is aimed at realizing the vision that states that by the year 2020, Bulgaria will have viable, productive and multifunctional forests, a sustainable, competitive and innovative forestry sector, preserved biodiversity, and acceptable quantity and quality of water resources in such forest areas. The forest sector will support the economic development of the country, provide conditions for the full realization of its employees, it will further maximally mitigate the effects of climate change and ensure the maintenance of a healthy environment in general. As a result of the implementation of these provisions, it is expected that the ecological, social and economic functions of forests will be preserved and enriched.
Sustainable development of the forestry sector will stimulate the economic development of the country globally, it will contribute to improving the quality of life and improving the state of the environment. The implementation of the vision is linked to the achievement of three strategic objectives in medium time term: ensuring the sustainable development of the forestry sector by achieving an optimal balance between the ecological function of forests and their ability to provide tangible benefits and services in the long term; strengthening the role of forests in ensuring the country's economic growth and more balanced territorial socio-economic development; increasing the contribution of forestry sector to the green economy.
