Protocol on Marine Pollution resulting from the exploration and exploitation of the Continental Shelf ratified by Decree No. 9 of 1990.

This Protocol is composed of 15 articles. Article 1 gives terms and definitions. Article 2 invites Member States to take all appropriate measures to prevent, reduce and control of marine pollution within limits and borders of each State. Articles 3 to 14 deal with the obligations of Member States, in particular to: take all appropriate measures in order to prevent, reduce and control of marine pollution within the limits and borders of each State; provide the Environmental Impact Assessment or a maritime survey of the marine environment and aquatic animals in the region before granting licenses to be delivered to the Regional Organization for Marine Environment Protection; competent authorities of the Contracting States shall observe and respect guideline rules related to the Environmental Impact Assessment issued by the Regional Organization for Protection of Marine Environment; carry out the survey of the seabed adjacent to marine facilities and installations; be available in marine installations and facilities adequate equipment to meet any emergency of pollution; conduct periodic control for anti-explosion, and safety equipment; conduct training sessions and courses for workers in oil fields and offshore installations; prepare a contingency plan for maritime accidents; prevent to discharge waste oil, waste liquids used for installations and plastic materials in the sea; and, prohibit to use of drilling fluids in oil-based drilling.
