Abstract
This Strategic Plan is a 3-year sectoral document developed by the Department of Forestry of the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism to be a guide and reference for implementing the Department's strategic steps in realizing the contribution of the forestry industry to the achievement of Brunei Vision 2035 based on sustainable forest management practices. The overall goal is to accelerate the output growth of the high-tech and export-oriented forestry industry by (i) encouraging the participation of local and foreign direct investment; (ii) focusing on increasing productivity and the production of high-value products; (iii) emphasizing the balance of the environment and social needs. The Plan sets out the following strategic objectives (i) increase output from the forestry industry to contribute to GDP growth, diversify the economy and increase the export; (ii) increase the productivity of primary industry by using modern technology and best practices as well as ensure the sustainability of the environment and sustainable timber industry resources; (iii) encourage the involvement and joint ventures of local investment and foreign direct investment (FDI) in developing downstream and value-added industries that are wood-based and non-wood-based; (iv) maintain the excellence of Brunei Darussalam's forests for environmental conservation and biodiversity to contribute to economic growth based on natural resources.
The core interventions are foreseen in the field of promotion and diversification of local industry and wood products, taking into account the sustainability of forest management, therefore (i) continue granting logging quotas to logging companies according to 'company performance' to encourage company output; (ii) issuance of a license to take forest products; (iii) develop programs to promote local timber products; (iv) prioritize the use of local wood products in Government projects; (v) reduce imported products and increase the local production; (vi) provide incentives for company accreditation certification.
