Decree No. 38.403 providing for the prohibition of the use of fire for cleaning and managing areas in the State of Maranhão.

This Decree prohibits, throughout the State of Maranhão, in the period between 11 July and 30 November 2023, the use of fire for cleaning and managing areas, except for the exceptions provided for in Federal Law No. 2.012, and other provisions of environmental legislation. Even in cases where the use of fire in agro-pastoral or forestry practices is legally authorized, the use of fire must be replaced with other sustainable practices, whenever possible. The State Secretariat for the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMA), considering the technical opinion of the Maranhão Military Fire Department (CBMMA) will be responsible to issue the expected exceptional authorization, in a well-founded manner.
