Abstract
This Law aims to preserve and protect Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, with an emphasis on developing the spread of monocultures, such as eucalyptus and soybean plantations. New plantations, on a medium and large scale, are prohibited in the Lençóis Maranhenses, aiming to safeguard its rich fauna, flora and water resources. The municipalities throughout related territory will observe the parameters of regional interest, established by State law, prevailing the rule ensuring greater environmental and socio-biodiversity protection. Traditional knowledge associated with the genetic heritage of indigenous populations, traditional communities or traditional farmers is protected by this Law as a measure to safeguard the socio-biodiversity of Lençóis Maranhenses, for which the State will promote: the delimitation and protection of priority areas for conservation and ecosystem recovery; encouraging the implementation of agroforestry systems; the promotion of scientific research aimed at the conservation and sustainable management of the biome; the creation of environmental education and training programmes for the local population; encouraging ecotourism and sustainable tourism in the region.
