Law No. 12.233 defining the Guarapiranga Water Basin Springs Protection and Recovery Area.

This Law creates the Guarapiranga Water Basin Source Protection and Recovery Area (APRM-G), located in the Alto Tietê Water Resources Management Unit (UGRHI). Its objectives aim to: implement participatory and decentralized management of the APRM-G, integrating government sectors and civil society; integrate regional and sectoral programmes and policies, especially necessary for the preservation of the environment; establish the basic conditions and instruments for ensuring and expanding the water supply to the population, promoting actions to preserve, recover and conserve the water sources of the Guarapiranga Water Basin; guarantee the conditions necessary to achieve the Guarapiranga Reservoir Water Quality Target; regulate land use and settlement in the APRM-G, in order to regulate the limits of water pollution defined for the Basin and protection of the source; make socio-economic development compatible with the protection and recovery of the source; regulate and redirect urban sprawl away from water production areas and preserve natural resources; promote environmental education activities, etc.
