Law No. 15.228 providing for the use, conservation, protection, and recovery of the Pantanal biome.

This Law provides for the use, conservation, protection, and recovery of the Pantanal biome, as a national heritage site, which shall comply with the provisions of this Law and current environmental legislation, in particular Law No. 12.651. Public policies will promote Pantanal biome sustainable development and will have the following objectives: support and encourage economic activities aimed at protecting this heritage and that ensure employment and income for its population; guarantee legal certainty and respect for the perfect legal act in relation to the continuity of economic activities that have been implemented and consolidated; improve the quality of life for all segments of society, with social inclusion and a reduction in regional inequalities; recognize the social organization, culture, customs, languages, beliefs, traditions, and development of indigenous peoples and traditional communities, as well as their appreciation; recognize the social organization, culture, customs, and traditions of the Pantanal people; recognize traditional knowledge as a contribution to the development and promotion of the region's potential; protect biodiversity and the flood regime and respect for the associated values; enhance products and services originating from the Pantanal biome, as a means of diversifying the regional economy; promote agricultural development through training and rural extension, including incentives for technological alternatives to the use of fire; reaffirm the importance of the strategic function of agricultural activity and the role of forests and other forms of native vegetation, improving the quality of life of the population, and the country's presence in the national and international food markets; mainten and recover biodiversity and the hydrological regime of the Pantanal biome.
