Abstract
This Law prohibits throughout Brazil the production and commercialization of any food product obtained through the forced feeding of animals. It establishes a broad ban covering all foods derived from this practice and expressly includes foie gras—the enlarged liver of ducks or geese—whether sold fresh or canned. The law defines forced feeding as any mechanical or manual method that compels an animal to ingest food or dietary supplements beyond its natural level of satiety, including the use of devices that deliver food directly into the animal’s throat, esophagus, crop, or stomach. The main objective of the law is to strengthen animal welfare protection by eliminating commercial practices based on force-feeding and by preventing the marketing of products resulting from such methods. To ensure compliance, the law subjects violators to the criminal and administrative sanctions established under Brazil’s Environmental Crimes Law (Law No. 9.605 of 1998). The legislation provides a transition period of 180 days after its official publication before entering into force, allowing producers and traders time to adapt to the new requirements.
