Law No. 18.329 on the State Policy for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Creole Seeds and Agrobiodiversity in the State of Pernambuco.

This Law establishes the State Policy for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Creole Seeds and Agrobiodiversity in the State of Pernambuco, which can be implemented in an integrated manner with government policies and programmes aimed to ensure the human right to adequate food. The State Policy has the following objectives: protect agrobiodiversity and biomes; protect species, varieties and cultivars produced in family or traditional units, primarily edible plant species; respect traditional knowledge; strengthen cultural values; encourage the mapping of agrobiodiversity in Pernambuco; encourage respect, preservation and maintenance of knowledge, innovations and practices of local communities and indigenous populations with traditional lifestyles relevant to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and encourage their wider application with the approval and participation of holders of this knowledge, innovations and practices and encourage the equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of this knowledge, innovations and practices; encourage community organization with the creation of community creole seed banks; promote technical and scientific institutional cooperation aimed at conserving genetic resources, both on farmers' properties and in community banks and public germplasm maintenance institutions; encourage agroecological and technological research and participatory diagnosis processes related to raising awareness and rescuing agrobiodiversity among peasants; establish partnerships between social organizations with legal personality, representing family farming, artisanal fishermen, traditional peoples and communities and beneficiaries of agrarian reform and land credit and technical assistance entities, in order to develop local skills in the selection and storage processes of indigenous seeds and the implementation and management of seed banks; promote coordination between research, education, rural extension and technical assistance to farmer organizations; establish a system for replacing native seeds, etc.
