Abstract
This Law establishes the School Garden Program in public schools in the State of Santa Catarina, with the primary objective of promoting environmental education and improving students’ nutritional habits. It seeks to integrate school gardens into pedagogical activities, using them as practical tools for learning about sustainability, agriculture, and the environment. At the same time, the program aims to complement school feeding initiatives by encouraging healthier diets and raising awareness about food production and consumption among students. The law also aims to generate broader social and economic benefits by supporting community engagement and local development. It provides for the distribution of inputs such as seeds and technical assistance, encourages the use of school gardens as a source of supplementary food for students, and allows surplus production to benefit low-income families. Furthermore, it introduces the potential for income generation and social inclusion, particularly by addressing youth unemployment and contributing to crime prevention through constructive educational activities.
