Abstract
This Law establishes the State Policy for Ecological Restoration in the State of Goiás, aiming to promote the recovery of degraded or altered ecosystems and restore biodiversity, ecological connectivity, and ecosystem functions. The law defines ecological restoration as an intentional process to facilitate or accelerate natural ecological succession in damaged environments. Its main objectives include reversing environmental degradation, conserving biodiversity and ecosystem services, enhancing carbon sequestration, and contributing to climate change mitigation. It also explicitly promotes the participation of local communities and traditional peoples in restoration initiatives and encourages the use of sustainable techniques such as native species planting, natural regeneration, and agroforestry systems. The policy is guided by principles of environmental, social, and economic sustainability, and includes directives to foster community participation, integrate restoration efforts with broader environmental, agricultural, and climate policies, and promote continuous monitoring and evaluation. It further emphasizes the importance of identifying priority degraded areas, supporting research and innovation in restoration techniques, strengthening partnerships among public authorities, private actors, and civil society, and building technical capacities of farmers and local communities. The law mandates future regulation by the State to operationalize implementation and ensure effective monitoring of restoration outcomes.
