Law No. 24.455 establishing the State Policy for the Revitalisation of River Basins within the State of Goiás.

This Law establishes the State Policy for the Revitalization of River Basins in the State of Goiás. Its main objective is to restore and conserve river basins through the implementation of integrated and permanent environmental actions aimed at improving water resource management. The law promotes a comprehensive approach that combines quantitative and qualitative water resource management, biodiversity conservation, soil protection, universal access to basic sanitation services, and the harmonization of environmental protection measures with land use planning and socioeconomic development. It also emphasizes participatory governance involving public authorities, different sectors, and civil society. The policy seeks to increase water availability, encourage the rational use of water resources, expand vegetation cover in protected and environmentally sensitive areas, broaden sanitation services, and promote sustainable economic activities that affect water resources. To achieve these goals, the law prioritizes actions such as hydrological and environmental assessments, monitoring of water, soil, and air contamination, modernization of wastewater treatment infrastructure, preparation and updating of river basin management plans, enforcement of water-use permits and environmental regulations, payment for environmental services, and the provision of technical assistance and rural extension services focused on agroecological production systems, soil conservation, and the recovery of degraded areas.
