Abstract
This Law creates the State Code for the Protection of Animals, within the State of Rio de Janeiro. It establishes rules for the protection of (non-human) animals in the State, with the aim of protecting them from abuse, mistreatment and other cruel behaviour. It is under the responsibility of the public authorities and the Community to preserve wild fauna for present and future generations and to combat cruelty to animals, defending them from abusive exploitation, unnecessary suffering and death and all practices that jeopardize their ecological function or cause the extinction of species. The regulation of this Law will establish the State bodies responsible for meeting, complying with, monitoring and inspecting the provisions of this article, as well as determining the competences of the state level and what the municipal levels will be responsible for meeting, complying with, monitoring and inspecting.
